At NATHA we have for more than 20 years done a unique yogic practice called Yang Spirals. The Yang Spiral is a powerful form of group meditation done standing, holding hands in a spiral formation, in the order of the zodiac signs, alternating man-woman, for a shorter or longer duration – sometimes for several hours continuously. Often a musical background is used to support the inner focus.

The Yang Spirals are practiced at various occasions, including at important astrological moments such as the spring and autumn equinox, and the summer and winter solstice. In these moments, beginners and experienced yogis come together to unite their forces, creating transformative effects way beyond what each person would be able to do on his/her own, and even far beyond the sum of the individuals participating.

The Yin-Yang Concept

In both the Oriental philosophy and the modern scientific paradigm, everything in the Universe is seen as always containing a double aspect: day and night, light and darkness, sky and earth, positive (+) and negative (-), feminine and masculine.

In the East, the solar, positive, male aspect is called yang, and the lunar, negative, female aspect is called yin. These two concepts are in fact the expression of the Universal complementarity and dualism.

The clearest example of this duality is the electric current: in order to have electricity we need a positive pole and a negative pole.

Together they can produce electrical power – alone they cannot. None of them is better or worse than the other.

The presence of these complementarily opposed counterparts creates a tension, and from this tension, Life with all its dynamism is born.

The state of power appears when the two poles are very close to a perfect balance, and this power allows us to transform, thrive and transcend limitations to reach to a higher level of consciousness. On the other hand, a state of imbalance leads to weakness, suffering, illness, lack of self-control and lack of power.

Yang is the principle of order and structure, and it is centripetal (it proceeds toward a center or axis) and moves in energy vortexes that turn counterclockwise. It expresses the luminous, solar, dynamic and optimistic energy, and the impulse to come back to the Center, the Source of Creation from which everything that exists started and to which it will return.

Yin is the principle of receptivity, sensitivity, impressionability and fertility, and is centrifugal (it proceeds away from a center or axis) and moves in energy vortexes that turn clockwise. Too much yin energy leads to chaos, lack of structure, increase of entropy and a sense of getting lost in the maze of life. An imbalanced yin predominance causes involution and chaining to the reincarnation wheel, taking us further away from the Center.

At this moment in time, there is generalized tendency on this planet towards a yin imbalance, leading to an excessive focus on materialism, social life, pleasing the senses and an exteriorization of the consciousness, while true spirituality and the impetus to discover our true nature, interiorize and lift our spirits to the heights of its potential is absent in the life of many people.

The Yang Spiral is formed in a counter-clockwise direction and thus creates a flux of Yang energy, which is the solar, optimistic sun energy, that is often needed to amplify in our being for creating an energetic balance. The inner balance of energies can be felt as a feeling of inner light, happiness, love and joy that is spontaneous and free.

The aim of the Yang Spiral meditation is to bring into awareness of the participants the presence of Cosmic Consciousness and to be part of the worldwide efforts of raising the consciousness of the planet and of entering into a superior stage of evolution of humankind.

During the Yang Spiral it is recommended to focus upon the following:

• The yang flux of energy entering your body through your left hand and continuing its way along the spiral formation through your right hand. You may even perceive and visualize a yang vortex of energy with in your own being, centered around Sushumna Nadi in the subtle level of the spinal column.
• Being enriched with the qualities and virtues of all zodiacal signs, a feeling of becoming a complete human being and expanding towards becoming a cosmic being
• A strong elevation and sublimation of your inner energy due to increased energetic balance

Sometimes it is possible to feel very clearly the areas of the body that are imbalanced, the subtle energy centers that are blocked and the aspects of the being that need improvement.

Even though this might manifest as a slightly unpleasant sensation in the respective areas, it helps us discover where we need to transform, and in the subsequent meditations these experiences will gradually diminish and disappear completely as a result of the balancing and healing effects of the huge beneficial energies that manifest during the spiral.
